A surgeon once removed his own appendix—yes, by himself!
In  1961, Soviet doctor Leonid Rogozov was stationed in Antarctica with no  other medical personnel around. When he developed appendicitis,  evacuation was impossible due to extreme weather. So, with just a  mirror, some local anesthesia, and two assistants handing him tools, he  performed the surgery on himself and survived!
