The Barberini Faun (also called the Sleeping Satyr or Drunken Satyr) is a life-size ancient marble statue of a reclining satyr from the Hellenistic period around 220 BC. It shows a mythical woodland spirit associated with Dionysus’s retinue in a relaxed, drunken sleep with spread posture and a panther skin under him, highlighting naturalism and emotional expressiveness typical of Hellenistic art.
The statue was rediscovered in the 1620s near Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, entered the Barberini family collection (giving it its name), and after later restorations was sold in the early 19th century to King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Since the 1830s it has been in the Glyptothek in Munich, Germany.
